Tips to Become a Defensive Driver

6 Tips to Defensive Driving

On the road, a small lapse of judgment might just cost your life (and/or the life of others). You can never be too safe while driving. Make sure you keep these in mind whenever you are the one behind the wheel:

  • Always buckle up.

That includes you, your front passenger, and everyone else seated at the back.

You might think that’s a little too unnecessary, but you never know what could happen on the road.

The safety features of your car are there for a reason – to keep out of harm’s way as much as possible. So please, use them!

  • Keep your eyes on the road.

There are a lot of unpredictable factors on the highway. What if suddenly there was a speeding car ahead of you? Would you be able to swerve out of harm’s way in time if you weren’t able to notice the vehicle in the first place?

Put down your phone or any other item that might distract you from driving (that includes your makeup, ladies!) just to be safe.

  • Watch the lanes.

Even if you’re careful on the road, that doesn’t mean others will be too. You could be following every traffic rule and you might even be driving at a decent speed, but you would still be in danger if someone around you is driving recklessly.

Look out for the other cars in your vicinity. Position your vehicle in an area that will allow you an emergency exit when you need one. Try not to stick too close to other automobiles to prevent collision as much as possible.

  • Stay on the speed limit.

Every different area has their own speed limit established in order to keep both the drivers and pedestrians safe. Would you really consider breaking the speed limit in exchange for a traffic violation and a possible road accident?

  • Don’t succumb to road rage.

You will encounter some drivers who could be rude. Instances like these are simply unavoidable. If you choose to go toe-to-toe with them, both of you could suffer the consequences. Don’t let emotions cloud your judgment. Yielding is not being cowardly; it’s about being smart and safe.

  • Have your car maintained regularly.

“Oh no! We’ve run out of brakes!” is a usual line we hear in the movies. It can happen in real life, and it can happen to you if you don’t get your car maintained regularly, that is.

Take car maintenance as a precautionary measure. Your brakes and tires will only work as efficiently if the other is functional.
