Are Less Young People Driving?

Are-Less-Young-People-Driving

For decades, people have criticized millennials for their crazy and dangerous driving. This is even shown with high insurance premiums for younger drivers. However, we may need to find something else to criticize as the number of young people getting driver’s licenses and owning vehicles is dropping quite drastically recently. Studies show that from the year 1983 to 2014, there has been a drop of 47% in the number of teenagers getting driver’s licenses, so why are young people no longer driving?

There are a number of reasons such as:

  • Time

Compared to previous decades, our youth have less time on their hands. They are overwhelmed with school, jobs, and many other responsibilities. Many teens and young people simply cannot find the time to worry about getting a driver’s license at the moment. This means they will put it off until later or not worry about it at all. This also means there are fewer people looking for the services of a safe driving school in CA.

  • Public Transportation

Another reason why millennials are no longer driving is due to the convenient public transportation options available in larger cities. Young people have access to many transportation services, such as ride sharing apps, taxis, buses, trains, and more. There are so many ways to get around that for many people; it simply is not practical to own a vehicle, especially with parking issues in big cities.

  • Cost of Ownership

Many millennials have a hard time affording their own place and some are forced to live with their families. Adding the extra expense of a vehicle, which can be quite expensive, especially with newer vehicles and their state of the art technology that are expensive to repair and insurance rates; it is simply not feasible for a lot of millennials.
